We have a car hired (or will do!) between Picton and Christchurch via Kaikoura and on the drive between there & Christchurch we want to stop off somewhere on the drive. Now lve noticed a place called HAMMER SPRINGS which has thermal spas - has anyone ever stopped off here - is it worth it for an afternoon? Can l chill out in a spa!

Yes, I went there for two or three days. It's a nice albeit boring little village. I personally didn't care about the springs and thus didn't even visit them (although they're supposed to be nice), and their other main attraction - being the closest bungy jump location to Christchurch (seriously, that's something Christchurch locals actually go there for) - didn't appeal to me either, but the walking trails aruond there are superb: the surroundings start showing the gorgeous vistas of the upper Southern Alps. (Some pics that might help you get an impression, although nothing much of the village itself.)

Since it's barely out of the way, I doubt you'd be overly disappointed with a visit.
