I've been in Sydney for the past month and even though it's been a blast just touring around and seeing the place, I'm getting a wee bit bored and think it's time I start looking for a job. I've got a pretty good situation here at the moment and am not ready to leave yet. I've heard that it's quite easy to find employment in Sydney and especially easy if you find employment using a temp agency. Unfortunately for me I have no idea how they work, or how to find one or anything! Just wondering if anyone could give me a heads up on what the deal is when you get a job through them, and what types of jobs are available (back in Canada I worked in an office and I'm really hoping I can do something similar here - would that be possible?). Website links would be much appreciated :)

Cheers,
Ahleeseeah

i know there are two good sites for jobs :-

www.seek.com.au
www.gumtree.com.au

have a look at these and if you try the local papers for jobs or hostel notice boards as they will sometimes have job vacancies up.

Hope this helps

Youth hostels in Sydney quite often have jobs faxed through to them that they post on notice boards.

Also, Travellers Contact Point in the Dymocks Building (7th floor) on George Street (can't remember number - the block parallel with Pitt Street mall (the pedestrianized bit) has an agency that sends a representative there, and I think they may also have a list of agencies in Sydney. TCP is a good place for info on jobs, and accommodation!

Thanks for the info, guys. Unfortunately I'm not staying in a hostel, I am staying with a friend out by Liverpool, so I miss out on all the stuff you guys mentioned. I tried the gumtree site but it seems like most of the jobs posted on there are for permanent positions. It sucks :(

2 options for you

1) Jump on a train to the city, and visit the agencies and/or Travellers Contact Point then. You're right on the Sydney Rail system being in Liverpool.

2) Why not consider staying in a hostel for a short while to not miss out on all the stuff being mentioned?

Option 1 is obvious but appreciated nonetheless I'm a bit shy so I was hoping to do it all online but if it turns out I have to visit the places themselves, so be it!

And in regards to number two ... I have considered it, but haven't really made a decision yet. I'll be doing the hostel thing up in Cairns for a couple months and right now I'm quite content where I am. But it might be worth a try.

Thanks to everyone for all their replies :)

I'm a lot shy, and when I did my working holiday in Australia I made myself go into Travellers Contact Point to the agency rep, and also later other agencies. I also stayed in youth hostels my entire 8½ months so I was constantly rubbing shoulders with many people I didn't know. Very good for shyness!

Hi there,
FInding a job in sydney should be very easy. The first thing I would recommend for you to do is decide what sort of work you want to do. I noticed that you wanted to do administrative stuff which is ok, but there will be lots of competition. I have got 3 suggestion on 3 different field of GOOD pay jobs.
1. Getting a green card
When you have this, it'll put you in a more advantage position when you apply for a warehouse job where they pay anything from $19AUD per hour to about $23AUD.

2. RSA (Responsible service of Alcohol)
If you prefer working in a bar or in a pub, then you have to get an RSA, which once agian is a must in the hospitality industry.Pay could start from $17AUD to $21AUD per hour.

3. TRAFFIC CONTROL
As it says and this is a highly paid job.

All this information you can get from http://www.tcptraining.com.

Good luck.
