Hi! I'm from the caribbean island of Puerto Rico, and this fall I will be moving to London for a year. I've been in London before, but only during the summer for a few days (and they happened to be beautiful sunny days). I'm worried that I won't be prepared for the fall/winter in London.
Can anyone give me any suggestions as to what I NEED to bring with me??? What's the most practical type of jacket (for cold, rain, snow???), boots, city gear??? If anyone has any ideas it would be great!! I only have 2 months to get everything together and I'm still lost.
I will be happy to try help you sort the requirements for your stay.
The weather in the UK is constantly changing almost day by day, and sometimes during one day it can be cold and wet in the morning and dry and not quite so cold in the afternoon.
London rarely gets snow and when it does that is for a few days only.
For cold days it is a matter of adding a few layers of light and warm clothes under a windproof jacket or coat, rather than one big bulky heavy woollen jumper. A warm woollen hat, scarf, gloves and socks should be part of your kit.
As you probably know from your visit rain is a fact of life in the UK and mostly that will be what you need to provide for.
Some of the things you will need can be brought with you if you think they are cheaper to buy at home, most other things can wait until you have been here and know for sure how your body adapts to the change of climate, surprisingly the first few days or weeks may not be too much of a problem.
I have a friend here from St Lucia who is in the British army and I know how we got him equiped for living here.
Have a think about what I've said and then please get back to me whenever you want, my direct address is email@example.com if that is more convenient for you.
thank you for your advice, i really wans't sure how cold it can get in london, as i've only been there in summer. i do have some more questions though: aside from the ever-present rain, does it tend to be windy as well? will i need a sort of windbreaker/jacket? also, what would you suggest for my feet? any particular type of boot/shoe you think is best for london weather?
it gets SO SO SO SO SO SO SO cold in london in winter! wear as many layers as possible!
