My Husband and I are planning on vacationing in Europe. I am on Light Probation for the next 12 months. Would like to know if I have a criminal record will I be able to obtain a passport, and travel to Europe?

As far as I know, european countries are not interested in these kind of things before letting you enter. To enter Europe (or at least, the Schengen area, which comprises only part of the EU), all you need is a valid passport. I doubt however that US authorities will issue that to someone who is on light probation.

To make sure, you could contact the Royal Netherlands Ambassy; they have several offices in the US, and they should be able to give a definitive answer to the question of being able to enter. As for the passport issueing thing, best contact the official who supervises your probation.

Good luck,
Niels

Yep, bentivogli is right. Europeans usually don't care about this kind of stuff. It only gets interesting when you need to apply for a residence/work permit, if you are wanted internationally or committed a crime on European soil.

I think your biggest problem will be getting a passport.

As a U.S. citizen you won't need a visa when you enter the Schengen countries, so if you only want to make a short visit under 90 days you get off the plane, walk up with your passport up to the immgration counter, fill out an entry card and get waved through - no questions asked.

Hello Thehigs

When u get off probation, I dont see any reason why u should not be able to get a passport, and travel to Europe.
But, u could check, with the passport office(or whichever office issues the passports, where u are), before u go to the expense of applying.

Why would u have problems, getting into Greece?
If u mean u have a criminal record, I dont think u will have problems. Unless, u are convicted of something like murder and u are on the run.;)
