I think you should live near your work because Shanghai is a big city and the traffic is not so smooth. I guess you won't like a 2-hour commute each day in a packed subway or a traffic-jam road.

Why not have a trip to Shanghai to feel this city before making any decision?

I understand about the commuting, what about the cost of living?
The wages? is it a good lifestyle over there,eg fun, exciting ?Do you know where the sofitel hotels are? if so are these in areas where people also live?

Yes, I'm agree with "beckysh". Before making any decision, you could visit Shanghai first. Have you been to Shanghai? Do you like it? Maybe some people told you Shanghai is a very beautiful and nice city, but when you stay there, live there, maybe you would find you don't like it. So just have a try. Give more choices to yourself before making any decision.

As for the cost of living, hm...how should I say. It's well-known that the cost of living in Shanghai is the highest. But for wages, some people could get RMB40.000/month, but some people just get RMB1000/month. How to say? It's really difficult to say.

I think I just could say GOOD LUCK to you. :)
