I know this is kind of similar to the previous thread and very much planning ahead but....

We're going out early-mid nov, planning to be down sydney/melbourne way for around xmas time, the question is, where should we spend new years eve - sydney or melbourne? And where bouts in either place could anyone recommend?

Cheers,
anna x

If you check out this thread http://www.travellerspoint.com/forum.cfm?thread=25435 its asking moreorless the same question as you pose!

It looks like Sydney is winning hands down and the advice seems to be down by the harbour area - get there early and get yourself a good spot!

Note that I've already seen the first post claiming that hostels are sold out in Sydney. Seems kind of early for that in comparison to last year, and the poster might just have had bad luck, but either way, if you decide on Sydney, booking accommodation for that night is something you want to do as much in advance as possible.

we're heading for Sydney and looking at booking Base (if anyone has any comments on it?!) as they dont put prices up and it's pretty central. Was in Sydney for NYE 2004 and it was absolutely awesome although I'm sure Melb will be great as well as we were there for a month this yr and it was great. Recommend Greenhouse Backpackers on Flinders Lane!

Thanks guys for all you replies - much appreciated, especially as I didn't know you'd have to book hostels very far in advance for NYE (is the same true for xmas?).

Yes, though to a lesser extent. Still, I'd try to do that at least a month in advance, preferably two.
