whats the pros and cons of rail compared to bus or plane?

Here are some of the common ones.

Pros -

A train is much more comfortable than a bus.

Rail is a lot more flexible than a plane, if you are going to the Balkans it is a lot less flexible than the bus though.

With rail you travel from city centre to city centre, whereas a plane can take you to an airport up to 30 miles outside of the city you want to go to. If anyone doesn't believe this they should try flying by Ryanair to Glasgow and see where you end up!

Rail is a lot more convenient than a plane, you just turn up and get on, there are no customs to go through and you don't need to reserve a ticket a lot of the time.

There are rail passes available which can under the right circumstances make it cheaper than anything else and make it a lot more flexible where you go.

You can get reasonably comfortable overnight sleeper trains which save you having to pay for a hotel room that night or waste a day travelling. You can also get overnight buses but sleeping on a bus is a nightmare.

Cons -

Rail is usually more expensive than the bus.

Rail takes longer than a plane.

Some countries in Europe do not have very good rail services such as Bosnia, Albania and Macedonia.

You can't go from one side of Europe to the other side by rail unless you have a lot of time on your hands.

A large con of flying is the burden it puts on the environment; all the pros of both buses and trains have already been mentioned by Frank.
