Travel Forums Central/South America & The Caribbean What to see in Brazil, São Paulo / Parana provinces?

bentivogli has indicated that this thread is about Brazil

I have to be in São José do Rio Preto, São Paulo province, for a conference. After that I plan to travel south (by bus) to show my girlfriend the Iguazú Falls. Is there anything else to see in between that's recommendable?

thanks,
Niels (Amsterdam)

If your're going directly from S.j.R.P to Foz de Iguacu, there is no really big turist attraction. Although, there are lots of nice places (I know the area rather well, since my parents in law lives in Maringa). Nearby Londrina there is a nice waterfall, Salto do Apucaraninha, but is can be difficult to get there without a private
car and you also need an authorization by FUNAI, since it is in a indian reservation. Otherwise, bigger tourist attractions, but not so close, are; Brotas in S.P (really nice with eco-tourism and very beautiful waterfalls as well) and of course Bonito in Mato grosso do Sul (this is definitely worth a detour if you have the time). Also Curitiba and Paranagua (Ilha do Mel) are worth a detour.

Hope you figure something out! Please count on at least 2-3 days at
Foz de Iguacu. Write if you need more info.

cheers, Sol.

Thanks Sol,

I have a hard time estimating travel times in Brazil. For 19 days of travel, at least four of which have to be spent in Buenos Aires, which of the following scenarios would you say is the most feasible:

SJdR - Foz do I - Puerto I (ARG) - Asuncion (PAR) - Resistencia (ARG) - Salta - Tafi del Valle - sM de Tucuman - BsAs

OR

SJdR - Brotas - Foz do I - Puerto I (ARG) - Asuncion (PAR) - Resistencia (ARG) - Salta - Tafi del Valle - sM de Tucuman - BsAs

OR
SJdRP - Campo Grande - Bonito - Campo Grande - Foz do I - Puerto I (ARG) - Asuncion (PAR) - Santa Fe (ARG) - BsAs

OR

SJdRP - Campo Grande - Bonito - Ponta Pora - Concepcion - Asuncion - Pto Iguazu - Buenos Aires

I am trying to combine leisure time with showing my girlfriend something more of SA than just one or two touristic highlights... man, that's hard if you've only three weeks!

thanks a lot,
Niels

Hi Niels.

Unhappyly, expcet Buenos Aires,I never been in the places you described above.

That's a difficult question. I know most of the cities you mention
but not all. In fact, I think that all the options you mention are
doable, although you might get a bit stressed and need a holdiday
after your holiday (thats how I am after my holdidays). So, I
suppose it depends on what you're most interested in, natur, cities,
achitecture, etc. On a two months tour I did in SA Bonito was
probably my second best place (after machu picchu) - that how much I liked it. But I'm also a nature freak. If you go be sure to go snorkling with the fish in the cristal clear rivers. I also really
liked Salta a lot, both the city and the surroundings (like Cayfaytte,
Jujuy), so probably I would suggest itery 1 or 3. In one you will
be travelling alot more making the travel versus pleasure ratio
worse. I'm wondering why you always include Asuncion, it is not really a turistic place although interesting to see it. Right next to the beuatiful presidence palace I saw the worst shanty town I've seen (and I live in Sao Paulo). Resistencia is not worth a stop - nothing to see there, but if you want to break a long trip it might be a place to rest.

good luck, Sol

Hallo Niels,
Why not: Sao José do Rio Preto - Campo Grande (Pantanal- - Bonito (Rio Sucuri) - Via Dourados to Curitiba (train to Paranagua, get of in Morretes and return via the "Graciosa") - Foz do Iguaçu - Buenos Aires?
A very nice trip, very well to do in 19 days taking the bus.
Have a nice trip.

I don't feel like travelling as far east as Curitiba... but thanks, it's an interesting itinerary you're suggesting ;-)
