I recently went for a lunchtime bevvy with a work colleague and we got chatting about travelling. I told him I was planning to visit the East coast of Aus later this year and he said you can't swim in the sea in certain places from Oct - Feb because of all the jellyfish and other various stingy creatures. I'd like to plan around this as much as poss but being a little inebriated, I can't remember the finer details of the conversation, can anyone fill me in on whats what?

This is crap, u can swim all year round in australian beaches. It will be cold obviosuly if you do it in winter but if your here for australian summer you will be in the water with all the other aussies!
Some beaches can have problems with jelly fish hanging around at certain times of years but it won't stop people swimming at the beach. If you go to main beachs in australia, in summer the surf partrol are usually out and they will warn you if there are any problems with Jelly fish etc. Maybe if your by yourself, don't go in to far or stay near people, exspecially at surf beaches with waves as you never know what sort of trouble you can get into with ripes an strong waves etc. And wear sunscreen!

sorry posted halfway through.... that is unless your in far north queensland. the box jellyfish is deadly. but its to hot to live up there at that time of year anyway (in my opinion) but you wont have a problem if your in south east queensland or new south wales, which have the best beaches anyway. so you should be fine. just pay attention to the signs.

It depends on where you are on the coast.

(I hear James is a bit thorny when it's that time of the month - so avoid sydney then )

Thanks for the replies guys though it still seems a little unclear. I guess I'll chance it ;)

I remember having a scary moment last time I was in Australia....I went body boarding in the sea on Xmas eve....and when I went back for a Xmas stroll the next day, the sand was covered in jellies! Luckily this time my boyfriend will be around to pee on me should any attack!
