I will be visiting Port Douglas in a few weeks. Has any one been there, is it very nice? I'm also thinking of doing some diving there. Is it a good place for diving?

James :)

I live i Cairns which is about 45 mins from Port Douglas and have been there a few times. While it is a very nice place and is definitely catered for tourists I also find it a bit dull and very expensive (even more so than cairns). If you are going on some of the reef cruises that leave from there then you are sure to get some excellent diving and if you have a car then make sure you go for a day trip up to cape tribulation and the Daintree (about an hour north) and maybe visit Mossman Gorge where there are rock pools (about 15-20 mins drive away). If your after a bit more fun and excitement and enjoy the nightlife then head to Cairns for a couple of days...I think it is a much nicer town but I'm sure you will have to pass through there on your way to Port Douglas. Anyway hope that kinda helps a bit...have fun

Hi jimbob
I am a Port Douglas local and I can tell you, you will love the place.
We are at the closest point to the Outer reef and there are many good operators that will take you there for a day diving and snorkelling.
A couple of great operators are Poseidon, Haba and Silversonic.
Poseidon and Silversonic visit Agincourt Ribbon Reef, and you get to visit three different sites. Haba visits two sites ( less time travelling and more in the water)and has the advantage of a new catamaran.
If you need more information about Port, let me know.
