I'm thinking of doing a short trip to Japan. Can anyone recommend budget places in Tokyo and Kyoto. When I say budget I mean as cheap as possible wihtout compromising safety!
And if I need to go from Tokyo to Kyoto to Mt Fuji back to Tokyo, is the JR pass the way to go? Will busing be cheaper and allow me to save on accom if there are over night buses?
If youy are only travelling from Kyoto to Tokyo one way, then a bus will indeed be cheaper. Night buses take about 8hrs from memory. If you are doing a return trip, then a JR pass makes sense, will save you time, and will also allow you to get from the airport for free.
In Tokyo, look for the Khaosan hostel. It's a cool little place in Asakusa (NE centre) and about as cheap as you are likely to get.
oh one other thing, can the pass get you on some slow overnight train from Tokyo to Kyoto to save on one night stay?
And can one get from Kyoto to Mt Fuji, then from Fuji back to Tokyo?
thanks again for advice!
