Taxi from the airport to midan Tahrir (Egyptian museum) should not cost more then 35 LE. From the airport its more a hassle to get a good price (first go to the carpark with the shuttlebus, there are more taxi's and you have a better position to negotiate). From Midan Tahrir to the airport I went for 35 LE. Taxis in Cairo should normally cost about 1 to 1,5 LE per kilometre for locals. Foreigners are always charged more.

Everything in Egypt is inexpensive. Team up with 1 or 2 other travelers at the airport to save money. 3 in a taxi is no problem. Visa's are easy to get at the airport, no problem.BTW, you can probably get the Sheraton on the Nile downtown for about $65 a night per room at the hotel desk (if you bargain). Not the cheapest (I understand it's mainly backpackers on here) but a $65 Sheraton room is 100 times better than a $50 3 star Cairo hotel room (have first person experience with both) - look at it that way (have no idea how much you wanna spend). Don't forget to hit the RED SEA - AMAZING PLACE !! Zoom

For that amount of money you spend on a hotelroom in one day I could do an entire week. But I agree that you don't spend $65,- for the Sheraton in Europe or the US. So in that way its cheap and good value.

Me too. It is perfectly possible to get a bed in a dorm for 30 LE, which is about 6 USD. A single room with private bathroom goes for 10 to 20 USD a night.

As usual if you go to an african airport the taxi drivers will see you are a foreigner and they will try to charge you max (a normal statement will be that they want 150 LE for driving you anywhere). Yo can haggle and to downtown it should be between 30 and 50). They will not have change, so keep small notes (ATM's normally give you 100, 50 and maybe 20). What you also could do is to use one of the yellow cabs (government cabs for tourist I think they are called cairocabs). They have a taxameter and if you are not good in discussing price, they will give you a safe and inexpensive trip. Some hotels also have shuttle busses so you might want to check with your hotel. Tourist visas can be purchased (15$) before going through the passport control. Look for something that looks like an exchange station (bank misr or similar) ..

Very funny to see rich western travellers writing about overpaying a taxi ride. Please remember cabs in Europe/USA-citys are more expensive so going to Egypt will be cheap. The Egyptians are trying to make a living to. If you give them one of two dollars more they will be very happy and more willing to drive you around and inform you about places to go/not to go. This summer my holiday will start in Cairo and I am really looking forward to it. Knowing I will be a rich guy for Egypt I do not care about a euro/dollar more or less. Just have a good time !!
