Travel Forums Asia Thailand Departure Tax

My fiance and I are leaving for Thailand for two weeks next Sunday. Our travel agent mentioned a departure tax that has to be paid upon leaving Thailand, but she didn't mention how much it is -- can anyone tell me how much this tax is? And just out of curiosity, what is the purpose of the tax? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all! :)

The Thailand departure tax is 500 Thai Baht and HAS to be paid in their currency. About the purpose of this tax, don´t really know, at least, it´s not the 20 or 25 USD when leaving Cambodia!

But just wondering if anyone can tell which airport in the world has the highest departure tax?

Do you have to pay departure tax if you go by land?

The international airport departure tax (i.e. when you leave Thailand by plane) is Baht500.-. Only Baht currency is accepted. YOU WILL NOT PAY FOR DEPARTURE TAX WHEN YOU LEAVE THAILAND OVERLAND.

I heard rumor that the concerned authorities in Cambodia are talking about bringing down the USD25.- international airport departure tax. So let's pray for it to come true. If that's the case, Cambodia will no longer be the country that charges the highest airport departure tax in the world.

There's also a similar tax (400?) at Samui airport!

yes there is a similar departure tax from Samui airport, I think it is 400B for all flights. This is because Bangkok Air privately own the airport and can charge what they want!

However if you are going to be flying internationally within 24 hours of departing Samui airport, you can just pay the one 500B charge just remember to keep your payment receipt!

The charge from Bangkok for international departures is 500B and it can be paid by cash or card, there is a machine before you go through passport control.
