I'm going solo to many places in europe and italy is one of them. My friend says that it wouldnt be the safest place for an 18 year old girl with blonde hair and blue eyes. i think he's being overly protective but he made me somewhat nervous in his rantings.. my spirit is still undiminished though and i am super excited to visit beautiful italy!

Any suggestions? Also, if anyone can recommend a good hostel in venice or anywhere in the cinque terre i would be really greatful. I think I have a friend i can stay with in southern italy, but am dying to go visit the cinque terre so i need a place to stay up there. Im going in the low season so hopefully things wont be too packed.

hi!

italy is safe as well as other places :)no special concern. of course, use common sense :)
there are some areas with more risks, but I think they are the same almost everywhere: bus station or train station in the night time, going around alone with the "lost in this city" face :)

have a nice time here in italy!

A friend and I spent 2 weeks in Italy recently, and we didn't feel unsafe once - except perhaps we could have picked a better location to stay in Rome (I guess anywhere around a train station is iffy). I found Italian men to be so very different from North American, men in general - very forward, flirtatious, and not afraid to stare. However, they are also polite and respectful, so we never once felt we were in any sort of danger. Just use common sense, as Luisa says, and you should be fine.

I've found that most people who tell you that you should be afraid of something are just too scared to actually do it themselves. Enjoy! You'll love Italy.

I agree with previous two posts... I've been traveling in Italy twice already by myself and I did not feel unsafe. I did feel a little bit uneasy when I first arrived at Napoli because there's too much traffic and the city itself isn't organized. But just be cautious like you'll be, when you are at any place other than your hometown, and always look after your personal belongings. Like Luisa said, always know what you are doing and use common sense. Be ready for a lot of attentions from Italian men.... I am sure you'll have a good time. Enjoy.

Yes, it is. Italians are very strange men. They fall madly in love for all the girls named Jen. And you know how the italian passion is: They follow the Jens at every hour, until the end (or at least until they have a chance on Jens).

They said the same to me and my friend, both quite blond (i'm dark blond she is really blond) and we had no trouble at all.. we were both 18 years old and we had an amazing time!!
it's was soo good for our ego, bella bella this and bella that.. although on some days we looked ehmm terrible

just go, like said before they are not as bad if you use common sense..

but perhaps a safety thing for yourself, I asked a male friend to use his name if somebody who i didn't like asked if i had a boyfriend.. later in spain somebody asked me if i was married.. no i'm not and not intending to.. but if you want to be safe for your own feeling, ask a friend to buy you a ring or so.. and than you can say you have a boyfriend and he is sooo amazing and he'll visit you later in rome

I'm a Jen with long blonde hair and blue eyes. I've never had any problems and didn't feel unsafe. Just be wise in where you go. Enjoy your travels. Ya never know - may meet the man of your dreams (italian or otherwise) Italy brings the romance in everyone I think!!!

I've never seen any sign of danger in Rome. There's so many people everywhere during the day, and at night, there's not many people around, except for the tourist places. Even walking around at night (I'm a man) would'nt seem like it'd be a problem for women.

Oh...just remembered, the only dicey spot is around the train station, especially on the sides.
