Italy is safe, however in the south of Italy, even italian women are weary of going out on their own after dark. Not sure how it is in other parts of the world, but where i live that's not the case. So you may want to consider that.

But Italy is an amazingly diverse place. It's absolutely beautiful. I wouldn't miss it for anything.

I have been to Italy,I think it is safe, but you must be careful with your belongings, especially in the subway, if you found a lot of children around you, you'd better leave at once, and pay more attention with your bag, for the men in italy,I think they are polite( maybe because my black hair and yellow skin are not attract them), maybe they will invite you to coffe, but it deponds on you, you can refuse.

Quoting Janire

The only people who are obsessed with blondes with blue eyes are the americans and we don't know why. In europe blondes are "passé" and considered not pretty but easy to get.... Men prefer brown or black women here, so you don't have to worry, belive me. (especially in latin contries).

hehe u r so right

hymen get over it

Be careful in train stations at night. Particularly any guys in the army. Otherwise, use your intuition, and always travel with another female. Only go out alone during daylight. Italy is awesome. Spend some money on a fine restaurant, though it takes an Italian or an expat to show you how to order and relax. Enjoy. They stare, they point, they'll try to touch. Just be ready. They will, however, respect you if you are firm with your boundaries.

I'm italian,(blond) girl, i feel safe almost everywhere in my country. In big cities (milan rome) you've to use more attention, especially during the night. During night in rome avoid Termini station surroundings and TIBURTINA STATION at all . There're many people in the centre, you'll have no problem.people from north to south are different, tend to be more and more expansive going to south (sometimes too much).
for sure they 'll start to chat with you, and offer you a coffee, you can accept if you like, they can also try to have your mobile number.hardly they 're rude. I think a nice girl is attracting for them regardless of the colour of the hair. They also appreciate slim girls, especially if their clothes are strecht and short. (I guess it happen everywhere..).
[as for shorth clothes, remember that you can't enter in St. peters (rome ) with short pants (only long ones) and undershirt (your shoulders must be covered). (the same rule is valid for men).]
as for naples be very careful, avoid to wear ANY jewel,to hang up your camera to your neck, use an hidden moneybelt: robberies are pretty frequent.
pay attention on the underground (rome, milan..)if it's crowded, there're gipsies and pickpockets.
i think you'll have fun!

I live in Brussels, and have been to Italy nearly 16 times in my life. I'm a teenager (girl) and honestly, Brussels is like Italy with the catcalling. I think it's because of the number of immigrants, not to be racist, Maroccans, Poles etc because it seems to be them that say stuff. For example, the other day I was walking home alone in a safe area at about 8 pm (it was still light) and I had 4 different 'incidents' of catcalling in a 15-minute long walk. First a van hooting on the main road, then a bench full of Polish workmen stared talking to me and staring at my ass which was like 50cm from their faces because of the narrow pavement, then 3 Maroccan guys started sayin 'salut' and lookin me up and down, then a van full of Morrocan guys clapping and hooting at me. It's not threatening, but it's like it is in Italy. You just ignore it and carry on walking but it is annoying. They also come over to you with lame excuses to talk like askin for a lighter or cigarette or watever...

Hello Hymen

Yes, i think your friend is being overly protective.
It is not so much dangerous, in Italy, as annoying. U will get more attention from men, than u want. After a while this becomes boring. Although, i have heard, that the Italian men are improving. They dont bother foreign women, as much as they used to.

Hostel in Vencice:
Ostello venezia
Fondementa delle Zitelle
Giudecca 86
Tel: 041 523 8211
Take waterbus 82, to get there, from the train station.
Book ahead, because it is popular.

This idea that Italian men are dangerous to foreign women is, frankly, offensive. Yes, Italian men are more open about letting you know they find you attractive than in more Anglo-Saxon countries (i.e. USA, England...), but that's just a cultural difference. Bottom line, and this goes for ANY country if you're a woman: if you give the impression that you don't take nonsense from people, people aren't going to give you any nonsense. Be respectful, but be confident, and it will show.;)
