I really need some advise - I will be travelling by TICA bus from Guatemala to Costa Rica, through El Salvador and Nicaragua alone in November. I have read all the government warnings (UK and US) about traveling on buses in these countries and it's made me pretty worried! Has anyone else taken this route alone? And does anyone know how often international buses get held up? Also if anyone has travelled this route could you give me some advise on where's good to stay and what is there to do in these places as i'll be staying a couple of days in each. Thanks
I will doing the exact same route, but the other way round (CR to Guatemala) in October and I am also solo female... will try and get on here after I have done it, but in the mean time read this thread.
(I don't know if I've entered this correctly, you may need to copy and paste into the address bar).
The Tica Bus is very safe, leaves Guatemala City around 1PM for San Salvador arriving after 6PM, you stay overnight right there at the terminal in the Hotel San Carlos $10US per person, remember this is old. crumbling downtown San Salvador, not representative of most of our city, with some beautiful areas. At 5AM you leave for Nicaragua, arriving there about 3PM where you can stay in one of the cheap hotels near the terminal and again be on the bus at 5:30AM for San Jose, about a 10 hour ride..you'll pay $7USD US cash only to enter and $3USD to leave Nicaragua, Costa Rica is free entry for 90 days. Their website is www.ticabus.com but you must make reservations in person in Guatemala City, go at least 24 hours in advance as the buses become full in Guatemala. You'll meet people on the bus, in fact most of the passengers are usually Central Americans.
