I understand that the tourist areas of NO are up and running. I live in Cancun so I can understand the need to have tourism back in town after hurricane Wilma hit us last year. I'd love to see New Orelans but have never been. I can only get away for a long weekend. Has anyone been there recently? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I was in New Orleans, but not recently (1997).
I would urge anyone to go, we had a great time, and the areas around it were great. We drove to Chalmette, which I found to be a perfect example of the famed "southern hospitality".
New Orleans has high crime rates though, moreso than other cities of the same size, so take extra care.
I haven't been to New Orleans recently either (last trip was 1984 ), but the city is working very hard to promote tourism again. I think you will have a wonderful time and see some interesting things! Mike is correct about the crime rate, especially after the hurricane. But, use common sense, don't wear a lot of jewelry and just be aware of your surroundings. You'll do just fine there. Enjoy your trip!!
I was in New Orleans for about a half day in October or November of last year. The French Quarter still smelled like sewage and seemed to be the only thing that was remotely near operational in the city. Hopefully things are different now because I was able to go about two weeks before Katrina hit and it was one of the most awesome cities I've ever been to.
