I'm planning on travelling from Siem Riep to Ko Chang in October. Does anyone know what kind of transportation is available for the journey? Are there buses from Siem Riep to Trat where I guess I should take a boat to Ko Chang?
Or actually which one you people recommend: Ko Chang or Ko Samed??
This should be pretty straight forward. Get yourself to Aranyaprathet, and get the next bus to Trat. From Trat there are frequent vans/taxis to the ferries. A very helpful website is 'talesofasia.com' on the route: SR to Aran. There are over 50 islands around Koh Chang is you want a quieter option. Good Luck.
I did the BKK-SR-Koh Chang-BKK overland trip late last year. All i can say is be prepared to travel alot! From SR, we managed to get a taxi to Poipet (Cambodia-Thai border) for USD35.
Once in Poipet u will notice a shop advertising hugely Taxi to Koh Chang but dont bother cos both times we asked, we were told there wasnt any taxis. There are a few other tour operators around one of which we found that they do run a mini van service to Trat for about 500 baht. I apparently takes only 3 hours.
However, we were lucky enough to find a taxi from for the trip to Trat for 1600 baht with aircond and was comfortable, expensive but comfortable. The journey took almost 5 hours...so whether the minivan can get there in 3 hours is suspect.
Other than that, there arent too many options to get to Trat from SR. But good luck anyways!
I was in Koh Chang last weekend and it was quite nice and quiet because there aren't too many tourists now. The only point is that the sea wasn't very clear because of the rainy season, so you don't find the blue coloured water of the beaches in the photos of the lonely planet guide but the weather until last weekend was quite ok, it rained just one night in 4 days and just during some minutes...
A lot of facilities on KC will be closed because of the rainy season.
You can trave down the river from Sr to Hat lek or the border near there but yit takes a bit of time
You can fly direct to Bkk then take a minibus to Laem Gnop which is where the ferries leave to KC (About 5hours).
these are my views on KC -
