Hi Jun Wei,

There's actually heaps of backpacker hostels around the area. You could also try the YHA hostels. There's actually 2 now right next to the Central train station and 5 mins to Chinatown.

I've stayed there before and it's always clean and the facilities are great. There's also a few other backpacker places on Pitt Street.

Hope this helps! Enjoy your trip!

The Macquarie Boutique hotel is very central and I know some people that have stayed there. It's basic and budget, so don't expect anything fancy, but you can get a private room in a good location.

A lot of the hostels, like Wake Up, Base and the YHA, also have private rooms, although they come with shared bathrooms often.

This list of properties in Sydney here on Travellerspoint contains a lot of the more known properties and you can break it down into only hostels or only budget hotels when searching. Oh, and yes, it's safe (saw your other thread :) )... over 100 000 bookings are made through the system TP use every month.
