Im off to thailand on the 1st of august so im getting all my jabs etc sorted out, just wondering if anyone has bought malaria pills in thailand, and if so where from and how much. Ive been told by my gp that they can cost from £28 for 14 day course up to £54 for the same length of time, which works out quite expensive for my 3 month trip. Any advice here would be greatly appreciated.
Also today i had three injections, hepatitis B, Japanese encephelatis(or whatever it is) and rabies they cost me £109, and will cost me the same again next week for the second course. I dont wanna sound like scrooge, but i never budgeted for any of these medical expenses so any one planning a trip should bear this in mind.
Which Anti-malarial tablets did your doc recommend? I got approx 3 months worth of Doxycycline in the UK before I left (Jan 05) and I can't remember but I think they cost about £60. Very expensive.
But I wished I got them in Bangkok. In the Boots Chemist in Bangkok, (which is perfectly reliable and they speak great English) Doxycycline cost 10 baht each, so for three months thats approx 900baht. Which is like £13 so a huge saving! They should stock different types, and you'll still save a LOT of money.
Most of Thailand is supposed to be safe from Malaria, its just certain areas, possibly near the borders of Myanmar, Laos and CAmbodia, (don't quote me on that) But you need to start taking them 7 days before you get to a malarial area. So if you are going to be in a malaria-free part of Thailand for at least a week when you arrive, I would definatly get them there.
Unless you're hiking in a jungle for days at a time or spending your entire trip in Koh Chang, I recommend not taking any of the pills at all.
The side effects aren't worth it. That goes for malarone or Doxycycline.
You'll have a great trip, though. Thailand is fantastic.
Thoier is right, you don't want to take them unless you really have to, and you probably will be ok in most of Thailand. I didn't take them in Ko Chang, but there is some question over whether it has malaria or not. By the way, Ko Chang is brilliant.
I bought lots because I needed them for Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia, and India too. A lot of people take anti-malarials without any side effects, but they're best avoided if not necessary.

I have purchased Doxycycline 100 mg. in the past. The price varies between local Thai made or European mfr. Figure on a price of around 4 to 10 baht per capsule. The pharmacies have other stuff for malaria, I am not sure if Meflaquine and Primaquine is available in all stores though. Doxy was available almost everywhere!
There are lots of pharmacies in Thailand, the prices are set by the government. I usually buy from companies like Boots, Watsons or another large company with a good turnover hoping I avoid counterfeit or old drugs that way. Read the little brochure that comes with the medicine, check the expiration date.
