Hello

My wife and I will be leaving the UK on the 23rd September to emigrate to New Zealand (my wife is a Kiwi and I am a UK Citizen). We are going to spend 8 weeks travelling around Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos but are not sure what to do about the visas.
Would we be better to send off our passports to the Embassys in London or just do it when crossing the boarders?

Many thanks
Neil

sure I will be back here again...hopefully to help others out.

:)

Visaa for cambodia nd Vietnam can be taken at respective airports after landing. If you are travelling by surface, then check out the border palces where you can get visa. MAY BE you can contact , respective embassies in your city.

Are they easy, quick and cheap to get at the boarders?

It all depends on where you plan to arrive. Most UK flights arrive in BKK as it is the major hub for SEA. Thailand will give you 30 days for free on arrival. You can obtain your VN visa in BKK for $25-45, depending on fast you want it. This is true at most VN embassies around the world. Fast costs more. You can get 'visa on arrival' if you enter Laos at the Friendship Bridge, $30. Cambodia will allow 'visa on arrival' at land crossings with Thailand, $20+.

If you land in Phnom Penh, you can get a 30 day tourist visa for $20 at the airport. Once in Phnom Penh, you can obtain your VN visa in one day for $28-35 from many guesthouses and travel businesses. You can also obtain your Lao visa in PP if you plan on entering Laos overland.

Laos will give you 'visa on arrival', 15 days, $30, if flying into Vientiane. 30 days for $30 if you obtain your visa at an Lao embassy beforehand. Obtain your VN visa when in Vientiane. You can get 'visa on arrival' to Cambodia at border crossings.

If you arrive in HaNoi or HCMC, you can get 'visa on arrival' if you arrange it first with a VN agency. They will charge you $30 for this service. plus $25 for the visa stamp. Google 'visa on arrival vietnam' to read how it works. Get your Lao visa in HaNoi if you are entering overland. Hope this helps. PM me if you have questions.

You can get them there but id say you might as well get them before you go, you'll by them from English speaking people and at least you can relax while you are there instead if worrying about it when you are out there!

One thing I will add is that your VN visa starts on the day you put down as your arrival, NOT when you actually hit the border. If you are not sure when you will arrive in VN, get your VN visa once in Asia. Phnom Penh is probably the cheapest & easiest place to get a VN visa. PM me if you have questions. Good Luck with your trip.

Get them there. They are cheaper and easier to get in SEA than in Europe. Every hotel/travel agent etc will be able to do tehm for you. Lao you can get 15day visas at all land borders (now), but 30day ones you need to get beforehand. Cambodia is easy at the major Thai borders, or in Bangkok and HCMC or Hanoi. And aspreviously mentioned, you have to specify specific dates for Vietnam, so if you are a week later arriving, you only have 3weeks left on your visa (although 1x up to 1month extension is easy to get in any major town in Vietnam).
