Vientiane is not far from Nong Khai Thailand. From Vientiane head for the FRIENDSHIP BRIDGE, this bridge spans the river - one end in Laos the other end in Thailand.

On the way to this Friendship Bridge area there is (on the Lao side) a "Spirit Park" that is interesting. This park has hundreds of statues of Hindu Gods, Buddhas, and stuff like that. (Xieng Kuan (Buddha Park), Vientiane, Laos is the name.)

Couple snippits from Google:

OR

You can fly from Vientiane to Bangkok direct.

A good hotel in Vientiane is the CHALEUNXAY HOTEL, not far from the U.S. Embassy and people's market. AirCon, TV, HW, Private toilet/shower and the staff wasn't too bad.

Good luck.

Land. Train (from the border) or bus are both easy to arrange in Vientienne (and elsewhere in Lao) and cheap. I would however suggest shopping around - Bus &/or Train options are sold by every guest house, hotel, agent etc, and prices can vary wildly for the same service (on the same bus). Decide how you want to get there, and then shop around a bit before buying one.
