Travel Forums Asia Help me, im goin to Thailand in 10 days

Hi,

Me and a friend have just decided to go to Thailand on 25th July. Neither of us have been before so pretty clueless on what we need to do before we go and what we need to take. Any advice on packing, jabs and where to visit would be very helpful.

We're planning on going from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, then down to the South. Do we need to get Malaria tablets for these places?

Thanks

Just realised i've done this post twice. First time. Apologies.

No, you're fine for Malaria tablets in that area, some people dp take them but when i was away, i had them for Vietnam and Cambodia but my doctor told me to stop taking them when i got to thailand! Chang Mai is beautiful! Make sure you ride an elephant and go trekking to the villages!!!

It's strongly recommended that you have hepatitis A and typhoid jabs before you go, and a tetanus booster if you need one. Take some deet-based insect repellant and drink bottled, not tap, water.

I travelled round Thailand earlier this year so you can message me if you would like any more advice.

Hope this helps.

If your visiting temples make sure you are appropriately dressed - no open toed sandals, knee lenght shorts/skirts, shoulders covered. It can be rainy at this time of year in Thailand so take a light weight waterproof.

Oh and can you take me - l loved Thailand so much!!:)

Thanks for the words of wisdom. Think we're gonna skip the malaria tablets, but does anyone know if a rabies jab is necessary? my friend had it before she went but it cost 80 pound n id rather spend my pounds on more fun things than injections!

Also dont spose anyone knows if it's better to buy a return flight when ur out there? Read on one sight that they're really cheap if u buy them in Thailand? Not bought our flights yet - leaving it very last minute!

Glad u all loved it so much, i am so excited about going

I guess it kind of depends on if your friend plans on biting someone!

(Only kidding.)

Many of the travel agencies advertise (sometimes on a sign right in their front windows) prices for various international flights. When you are in Thailand check out some of these travel agencies. I think the prices are pretty good. I know that I can find round trip flights to the U.S. cheaper in Thailand than I can in the U.S.

I usually stay in the Sukhumvit Road area, one travel agency I have used often is the Business Inn Travel Agency. They are located on Sukhumvit Soi 11, not far from the Nana SKYTRAIN stop. This Business Inn Travel Agency also runs a hotel where you can find rooms with Air/Con and private toilet/shower starting around 650 baht.

(Suk 11 Hostel is on the far end of this Sukhumvit Soi 11 location.)

Good luck.

If your starting of in Bangkok, Kaosan road is very popular amoung western/european backpackers. there are several hotels/hostels there along with plenty of bars. all the taxis outside the bangkok airport will know how to get there. theres also lots of travel companies along the road that only require making plans 1 day in advance. a nice cheap way to travel is through these companies by bus. you can get to pretty much anywhere in Thailand (including islands, they will give you bus and boat tickets) as well as cambodia.

i recommend taking as little as possible. when i went for 10 days (from chengdu) i took only a backpack. i spent most my time on the beach but regardless, most of the time youll want to wear nothing but a swimsuit and maybe a T-shirt. (you will need appropriate clothing to get into temples though.)

hope this helps

If a dog bites you then you'll need a jab (5 actually) but they are available here for about 5000 baht all in.
if a dog does actually start barking at you, the normal thing to do is bend down and pretend to pick up a rock...at this point they trot off....don't attempt to bend down in close proximity to a dog!
