If you were going to new zealand for six weeks without a plan, and there was one place anywhere in the country that you wouldn't miss for anything, where would that place be?

The Fjordlands of the South Island. Te Anau is a quite town which is a good base for visiting the fjordlands.

one place for 6 weeks?

I would say Fjordland but
I don't know about 6 weeks. Definatly 2-3
and do the hikes but I'm leaning towards Auckland since
your a quick drive to Bay of islands/Piha/Matamata/Coromandal
and you can take the ferry to the island in the gulf and etc.

Lake Tekapo. The most gorgeous location imaginable, with the most beautiful ever-changing light, and the most serene atmosphere.

Note that there's absolutely nothing to do there other than hiking and marvelling at the Lake, so only recommended if you're interested in beautiful nature and don't need a constant party atmosphere. :)

thanks soo much for the replies, i did mean one place that i shouldn't miss while travelling around new zealand, not one place to spend six weeks.
