I'm pretty sure you should be able to buy one for that price. The cheaper canon digital slr's go for around that rate, if not less, and they'd be a lot better than most! I'm hoping to buy one myself for around that price in the next month or so as my current camera died, so will be watching this thread for other tips on good cameras around that price!

Well, with an slr you'll always be carrying along quite some extra weight. The quality improvement is worth it though imo (I just shot a few rolls on my old manual and was so impressed when compared to the digital that just broke down). You can't really beat an slr if you want real quality pics and when you're travelling for a while, that's what you usually want

I picked up the Canon S3 IS last monh in Dubai enroute to the U.K. and am more than satisfied after having taken at least 1000 pictures. It was much cheaper in Dubai than elsewhere (paid about 2000 Dirhams). The plus is that it has a 12x optical zoom with excellent image stabilization, live histogram, can also record video if required and is possibly the only one which can zoom while recording video (I however rarely used the video feature preferring a separate video camera for that purpose but it is a useful feature to have). Log onto dpreview.com for the lowdown on all digital cameras - I think it is the site most trusted by the photographic community.

the cannon has a zoom from 36-422 mm . . which is awesome.

if you want a good slr i would go for for the canon rebel its 200$ and its amaaaazing if you want digi i would go for one of te canon a5 series a510 is my fav it gives no trouble and i would say its more for fashion photography but it gives justice to buidings as well as for the rebel i am going to buy my own soon because my friend is tired of me borrowing it for days on end :)
