I'm planning a RTW trip starting from Oct. I'm planning to spend Christmas and New Year in Sydney and was wondering if it was beneficial to book hostels in advance for the festive period? If so, how long in advance should i book them? All advice is much appreciated!
You should be looking at trying to make a booking now. Many places will say they are already full; they're not. They're just hanging on for the best rate.
I agree, you should certainly be looking to reserve as soon as possible. Don't forget, apart from it being Christmas, it's the summer holidays at that time, and there are many Australians who also visit Sydney then.
Of course, you can always wing it and hope to pick something up, but especially round New Year when the fireworks etc are on hotels, even budget ones, tend to bump up their prices, after all, it's their peak season!
[ Edit: sorry, no promos in the forum please. ]
I would recommend booking somewhere now. At least it gives you peace of mind, and if you wait until you get there, the places that have room are likely to be the less desirable ones. We booked Footprints on Pitt Street, and found this to be very clean, friendly and reasonably priced. We had friends who didnt book anywhere, and their hostel was nowhere near as good.
Most places will require a minimum stay period of up to a week over christmas and new year.
Enjoy your trip!
