yeah I think most of Southern Euorpe is hell-like-heat right now...

try visiting Koper in Slovenia - only a few miles from Trieste. Also Venice is about 2-3 hour train ride. And the Croatian coast is not far by ferry. Trieste is a great location for exploring - good choice.

I went to Trieste once as a kid. Isn't it just in the Italian border from (the former) Yugoslavia? If so, you might be able to get to Lake Bled or the Croatian Coast.

You definitely want to see Venezia! It's a 2 hour's ride by train from Trieste, you can get there very easily. Just remember to stamp the train ticket BEFORE entering the train... they are quite strict, and you risk paying a fee if you have not done that.
Venezia is at truly beautiful place, but quite expensive and very crowded.

If you are interested in horses, the Lipica stud is just across the border to Slovenia, half an hour's drive away. They breed the white Lippizan horses that are used at the Spanish riding school in Wienna. They have their origin in Lipica, hence the name... and the breed is one of Slovenia's true national treasures. Worth a visit...

Good luck!
