I will be in El Calafate from 8th September and wish to travel north to Mendoza by 20th September (inclusive of a couple of days in Mendoza - I need to be back in BA on 21stAM). Tight I know - the trip is more of a 'taster' rather than complete indulgent 'take-my-time' expedition. I would like ideas for a suggested itinary between these 2 points and in the specified time. And yes I know it will be cold!
That´s not too tight; it´s actually quite feasible. What about the following:
day 1: El calafate
day 2: the unavoidable trip to boring old Perito Moreno glacier
day 3: El calafate - rio gallegos
day 4: Rio Gallegos - Comodoro Rivadavia - Esquel (this is a really long day; breaking it up in Comodora might be more feasible)
day 5: Esquel - Bariloche
days 6, 7, 8: Bariloche and PN Nahuel Huapi
day 9: Bariloche - Mendoza (there should be a direct, overnight connection)
Mendoza´s nice enough to spend the remaining days. Of course, you could also take a bit more time around El Calafate, but I wouldn´t recommend it, since you would need more time to go all the way to El Chalten, and otherwise there´s not really that much interesting to see in the area.
Thank you Niels! that is very helpful....
In order to get up to Bariloche area is it inevitable that we will have to bus it to Rio Gallegos/Comodoro Rivadavia?? We didn't really want to go to that area... In your experience, are there buses to el Chalten and then from el Chalten further up via the R40?
Also, if this is the case, is R40 a reliable road to travel on?
And from Mendoza to BA, are there overnight buses? we have to be at the airport by 9am...
