I will be in Brisbane / Sydney due to work in mid-october this year. I would like to spend 1 1/2 weeks additionally in Australia to travel a bit. I love cities, beaches, sightseeing. Any advice what I should do with my time? Should I stay in Brisbane for a couple of days and then move back to Sydney where I will fly from back home? Suggestions for must-be places / must-have seen things? Any suggestions for hostels with single rooms?

if you love cities, beaches and sight seeing then Sydney is the perfect city for you. Brisbane is about an hour inland so you wouldnt have great beach access

Let's just say 1 1/2 weeks is awfully short time in Australia. It's like saying what should I do in Europe in a same period of time. I spent a year travelling around OZ and still have tons to see. But of course Sydney is a must and you can always go back for more.
All the best.

Yeah, definitely Sydney if you like beaches. North of the Harbour, there are some beautiful beaches that aren't too crowded. Palm Beach is my favourite, while I also like Narrabeen Beach.
