Heya Al,

There are a couple ways to get to Manhattan from JFK. There is a new Airtrain that will take you into the city and hooks up with the subway system, there are airport cabs, and car services. Depending on what time of day you are coming in, I could also probably run out and give you a ride into town if you want.

I am not sure about the airtrain, but I think it runs about 15 dollars or so for it, and taxis are around 35 or so, but they just upped their rates a week ago, so it might be a bit more now.

Another Travellerspoint member is coming in the day after you do and I have been thinking about having another travellerspoint get together in the city like we had last week if there is enough interest.

Let me know if you feel like meeting up.

Regards,
Ian

Hi Al-
New York is very easy to get around. The one-week Metrocard pass for the subways is a good deal if you want to see many areas of the city. It's great fun to walk between attractions, but it can get exhausting!

To get to Chicago, you can take the Amtrak train (www.amtrak.com), but it takes at least 19 hours or so. The fastest way is to fly. There are lots of airlines that fly between the two. Greyhound bus (www.greyhound.com) is probably the cheapest but least pleasant way to get there and will take the longest. My suggestion- fly.

There are shuttle buses from JFK that are I believe $10 or $15 each way. The best thing to do is ask someone at JFK where the ground transportation desk is and tell them you're looking for the cheapest, easiest way to get into Manhattan.

have a great trip!

Jessica

I'm actually planning on visiting NYC in June.
Would be great to have someone to hang out with.
Got any specific plan?

Sounds like there will be a number of Travellerspoint members in NYC in June. I'd be happy to meet up with you all while you're here and show you around a bit. Just let me know what dates you're going to be here and we'll plan on something if you like.

Hi,
I've actually got 2 weeks to go to new york. I'm currently in chicago and have been planning my itinerary pretty much day to day so far, staying in hostels. However i don't want to reach new york until 2 weeks time and want to know if anyone has any suggestions for where i can go in between chicago and new york, though there would have to be a hostel as i can't afford hotels!
Any recommendations? I'm having trouble finding any hostels outside of the big cities, or even in some cities (eg columbus).
thanks
charlie

CP, have you given any thought to swinging into Boston for a bit? I can't recomend any hostels there, but it is a pretty big city so I'd guess there are some there... It is also a popular stop for tourists in the USA.

If you look into Boston, try www.bostonhostel.org I can't vouch for them at all, but I came accross their website doing a quick search after that last post... Their rates(they say) start at 29 USD/night.. pretty reasonable I guess.
