Mikey - your bias on Glasgow!! Edinburgh is lovely my sister lives there - lots to do and see and you can understand their accent easier than the Glaswegians!!

They may be easier to understand, but the Glaswegians are less likely to look at you like you're about to poo in their garden or something. Snobby people those Edinbuggers . . .

Now now children, Both cities have their good and bad points, but it's easy to visit both since they are a short train ride apart. Having said that there are some great places to goto on the way.

Im not offended my sister aint an Edinbugger!! But its a nice drive and l only know Glasgow for going out for drinks or going shopping in IKEA!!

But l agree with Jase007 there are lots of lovely wonderful things to do enroute and if the weather keeps up there is nowhere (except Northern Ireland (yes of course lm bias!!)) more beautiful! Visit both!!

Can I second Brighton for nice! Not cheap though. Also like York.

I think Manchester and Liverpool are good options to work. They are both really good University towns but with even more to offer. Liverpool has been awarded the European city for Culture and is really living up to it. I only live 20 miles outside both cities and regularly visit both for brilliant nights out! My brother has lived in Liverpool for the last 5 years so you can usually find me crashed on his sofa during the weekend!

Yeah, Salisbury is a nice town.

But i think Edinburgh iwhat ur after. It matches up to all the above requirements, small, cozy, walkable, fun. Not so cheap tho!

Glasgow's much better. Edinburgh is quite evil.

Sterling is nice, and Inverness.
Glas V's Ed, i can't comment as i've never got round to seeing glasgow. But I get the feeling it's just one of those things you like one or the other.

Well yur right - Glasgow is better in alot of ways - better nightlife especially. But from what the original post was - I think Edinburgh is more fitting for what Lovisa wanted - "nice cosy and not too big"
