Travel Forums General Talk New idea - Google Earth

So Im sitting here thinking ... where exactly are some this great blog sites and photos taken ... and it occurs to me that it would be nice if we had the facility to upload Google Earth KML files.

Where exactly is that temple? Click the link and I can zoom in.

For the mobile travellers that are purely blogging a trip, it would be fun to be able to bounce around the globe from home country, hotspot to hotspot to hotspot and back again.

I'm not sure if alot of server changes would be nessasary but it could add a new dimension to both the photo galleries and blogs.

Does anyone else think they might use this???

That's a great idea. I'm currently working on a project which collects placemarks for touristic sights and attractions worldwide and I know how exciting and helpful it can be to see a place and its surroundings in Google Earth.

Although not using Google Earth (despite the popularity of Google Earth, there's undoubtedly only a tiny percentage of the members here actually using it, so it wouldn't be very useful for most people), we are working on a mapping facility that integrates with both the blogs and the photos.
It'd probably have been done already, except that there were some necessary changes to make at a late stage, so you'll need to have patience for just a bit more. But it's coming! :)

Integration with Google Earth might be feasible as a second stage, too. That's something we'd have to look in to.

Ever heard of Google Maps API? Everybody can use it from just inside the browser. No special client software has to be installed, only JavaScript must be enalbed it's fairly easy to program.

And Google explicitly reserves the right to put advertising in the maps they serve through that. Not exactly something you'd want on a site like this. :)

Sander - Thanks for the site update info.
I imagine you are right about the bloggers not using Google Earth too much. I was think more for family and friends back home. I know my mum often looses hours zooming in and out on in the program.
I certainly like the ad-free look and feel for this site and dont have the time to learn to intergrate Google APIs even if they werent tainted as descrbed.

SaschaT - Thanks for the feedback and suggestion though. Its appreciated.

I was thinking of simply the ability to upload KML files as well as JPGs.

Another possibility could be Google Maps? Maybe like a special icon somewhere in the header (top right) which when click would take you to the a google map page. I envision maybe a little world map pic which is a simple hyperlink, optional usuage of course. Country, tempereture, tag, google map link ... Im just rambling now.

There is a Swedish travel site - Resedagboken - with maps that show exactly where in the world every member is right now. When logging in you get the question "where are you now?". It's not linked to the travel blogs though, but it's quite handy whenever you need to get in touch with someone who is currently at your next destination, to ask a question or whatever.
