I have been recommended to get a Thai sim for my phone which will allow me to make cheaper phone calls. Does anyone know if you get charged for receiving calls from abroad with a Thai mobile? When in Canada a few months ago I go stuck with a massive bill because of this.
Also the following website is great for making cheap calls abroad form the UK. I used it many times to phone a friend in Brazil last year. Might as well make the parents pay for the cost of calls if at all possible! You don't have to be a student either, thats just the title of the site.
I'm in Thailand, with a Thai sim, I don't pay for anything, other than sending messages and making calls.
Cheers Lauren, In that case make the parents call me everytime they want to know I have been murdered by fishermen/ swept away in a tsunami/ put in Thai jail for 12 years etc etc
You can buy a cheap Thai sim card as soon as you arrive at BKK airport. Just look for any mobile phone vendors that sell sim card. Register with the one that use prepaid phone card so you dont have to worry about bill as you pay as you use. All mobile phone networks in Thailand have this option. You can still call home abroad or send message.
ANY 7-11 WILL SELL YOU A dtac GSM CHIP FOR YOUR PHONE. You must , first, make sure your phone is unlocKed so it can accept SIM cards from other providers. If this is a problem have someone take you to MBK maboong krang , large shopping center at national stadium exit of sky train. There is an entire floor of people there just doing mobile stuff and they will be able to unlock the phone for about $10.00 US. You can also get recharge cards at 7-11. If you buy 400 baht cards it will generally extend the period , in months, that the number will be alive.
Also if you are dialing long distance in Thailand they will tell you to dial 001 country code area code and number, Calling in Thailand is cheap on Western Standards.
