Khao San Road is the famous budget/backpacker area of Bangkok. Lots of affordable places to stay, but other than being close to the Grand Palace and a few temples, I don't like the location of that area. It's not close to any of the good public transport (Skytrain & Subway/Underground), and also far from the good shopping and dining spots. Over on Sukhumvit Road is Suk 11 (near Soi 11, of course) and the slightly more upscale (but well under 1,000 baht) Rex Hotel (between Thonglor and Soi 32). You can also some some good and cheap apartment rentals (fully furnished) for a night or two in some parts of town.

If you want a good night life, you can't afford to miss Khaosan road. You can see it for yourself from here - http://www.bangkokbeat.com/vdo_info.php?vdo_id=12 and don't miss the video. Kind of cool :)

It also offers you a place to stay within your budget, though it is far from the central area. But you can find some other interesting places to travel around the area.

You are young, you might like the Khao San Road area with other similar age travellers, however I think the nightlife is better on Sukhumvit Road!

One hotel you can stay at on Sukhumvit Road is the Business Inn Hotel and Travel Agency. They are located on Sukhumvit Soi 11, air conditioned hotel rooms with hot water, etc. start around 650 to 750. They also have a reliable travel agency if you need plane tickets.

On the same soi (street/road) you have the Bangkok Inn, slightly better accomodation than the Business Inn @ around 800 baht. Another choice on the same soi, is the President Inn, same quality as the Business Inn starting around @ 700 baht.

In the Sukhumvit area you have access to the Skytrain, sort of an overhead trolley, which can take you all over Bankgok pretty easy. Lots of vendors, cheap restaurants, banks, travel agencies, etc.

If you mean fancy expensive nightclubs for a "good night life" then wait for more replies!

For regular bars you can just walk up and down Sukhumvit from around Soi 15 back to Sukhumvit Soi 1 and you will pass many. On Sukhumvit Soi 4 check out the Nana Entertainment Center, sort of a "mall" for go-go bars and beer bars. On Sukhumvit Soi 5 check out the Beer Garden. Just past Sukhumvit Soi 15, under the Ruamchit Plaza, is the Thermae Bar and Coffee House. Stop in there after 10 PM, they serve more than just coffee there!
