I was planning to fly to Zhongdian, Yunnan, from Beijing via Kunming next month.
Does anybody know if this may cause altitude sickness due to high altitude of Zhongdian (+3,000m)?
Has anybody done this airplane trip before?
Thanks a lot, cheers!
I haven't done that exact flight, but in Feb. I flew from Delhi to Leh, Ladakh (3500/meters). Also did Chengdu-Lhasa (3500/meters), direct flight to Cuzco (>3000/meters),etc., and never had any problems, other than being a little out of breath, slight loss of appitite & little trouble falling asleep. Some people do have some problems when going so quickly to that altitude. I'd say if you , take it easy the first day & drink A LOT of water, etc., you should be fine.
Where are you planning on going once you get to Zhongdian?
From Zhongdian I'm plannnig to head to Three Gorges-Lijang-Dali-Kunming-Nanning-Yangshou-HK.
Do you know any cool place within that itinerary?
FYI I only have 14 days to do the Zhongdian-HK itinerary.
Thanks a lot.
Diamox is a perscription that you can get that works very well to help prevent the symptoms of altitude sickness. I took it a couple days before I flew to Lhasa & Leh (Ladakh). Then took it for the first few days at the high altitute.
Seems like your hitting all the cool places. Assuming that you're also taking the river cruise on the Li river from Guilin to Yangshou, it's fantastic. Also the Red Flute Cave near Yangshou is an amazing cave complex.
Have a great trip!
