Traveller Helpers,
I'll be arriving in Singapore next year ~ May/June. The plan is to train up through Thailand, then to Cambodia, Vietnamn & then China. Taking Tran-Sibernian from Beijing to Moscow before flying home. Just wondering about the Visas especially for China. Is it easy to get a visa in Vietnamn before hitting China, if so where would be easiest location to get one? When in China what would be the easiest way to get Russian visa? I've heard you need to sponsored to enter the country?? Has anyone done a similar trip?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

All the Best
Jonnie C

The Chinese visa is easy enough...
the Russian one is harder... officially you need to get invited by a resident and prepay for all your accomodations. In reality you can buy a invitation and an itinery from a travel agent specializing in russia or even from an online agency. Then you take them to the embassy and wait.. and wait.. and wait...

alternatively you can pay an extortionistic travel agency to get all that for you but you'll probably pay double.

I just went through the whole thing in Mongolia.

Russian visa most easily gotten in Shanghai (in China). You can't get it in Beijing, so don't waste time there trying.
Visa for China can be pretty easily gotten in Singapore and Bangkok, not sure about Hanoi.

Kunming is easy and cheap, Beijing reasonably so, HK easy (although you are then outside China so would need a double entry visa to re-enter China). Travel agents In Guanghzhou and Nanning amongst others can also arrange your Vietnam visa, but cost a bit more.

Shanghai and HK are easy enough, But Beijing impossible unless you are Chinese or have Residency. HOWEVER - Phnom Penh in Cambodia is the single easiest place to get a Russian visa in the world, and highly recomended! In fact, they are probably the best embassy or consulate of any description that I have ever dealt with, and I have dealt with probably 250+ in the last 15years. Have heard Bangkok and Hanoi are both reasonable, but no personal experience.

And yes, you do need an invitation - no way around this - which you have to pay for, but many places to get it online withoiut fixing yourself to an itinerary, although technically you are supposed to. www.waytorussia.netand www.visatorussia.com are both good, and there are others.

Note that you for both Vietnam and Russia, you have to specify exact dates for your visa, and in the case of Russia you can only get it 45working days before the start. In Vietnam, you can extend once for 30days, easily. In Russia you can't extend at all, and don't even try.

No problem in Hanoi. All guest houses/hotels/Agents (and there are many) will do it for you for about 1usd, which is worth it to avoid the queues and hassles.

NOTE: In Vietnam, you need your passport for virtually everything, and they often won't accept a photocopy, so don't expect to be allowed on certain tours, or to check into most hotels without your passport. I.e. if it's in an embassy getting a visa, you will probably have to stay more or less where you are.

In China, you need your passport for all hotel/hostels etc, but with a photocopy of the passports information page, the visa and your entry stamp - and you need all 3 - I never had a problem checking into places, meaning you can move around a bit whiulst you wait.
