just booked rooms in the headquarters and up at laban rata
what im stuck with is what do i need with me?
obv ill be wearing walking shoes and layers so i can strip off or add things on
ill be with my parter and hopefully only taking one small bag with us but do we need in it??
we will be climbing to the summit and ive read that a hat and gloves are required, can you buy these things there or at kk???
we have a poncho, is that good enough or should we rent a jacket?
any help from anyones who's done this climb would be much appreciated!
im kinda nervous about the summit bit because i wouldnt say i was that fit!
also on the day we do the summit & walk down how long does the whole thing take? i was kinda hoping to get a bus to poring hot springs and spend an hour there but dont want to pay there prices to stay there so might be better staying a night in ranau?? it sounds difficult to get to/from poring?
any help appreciated
When I did the trek 5 years ago, it was very cold and snowing/raining on the second day up to the summit(not sure of the month but it was winter in Australia if that helps). Most people were too cold and unprepared to ride out the weather and wait for the sun to come up and missed wonderful views. Bottom is tropical and top is Artic-layers are your friend!
If you leave at 3 or 4 am bring a headlight not a handtorch as you will need both hands to scramble up the sheer rock face. They have a rope to help you get up and I think this section is best done in the relative dark(on your way back down you will understand why!)
The climb is a little strenous but if you pace yourself it should be ok. You dont need to carry much, personally I found down harder than up(maybe the buzz wore off!)
Some people got AMS and couldnt get past the Laban Rata house so some meds may be helpful as it can happen to anyone regardless of how fit you are.
Hope you get a good sunrise
cheers for the info
having a right nightmare sorting out the accommodation, the company who have taken over from kinabalu nature resorts are an absolute joke!
i sent them an email reservation and 6 days later had still heard nothing, so i called them and they said their email system had been down, anyways i booked it over the phone, they gave me a confirmation no. and said i would get an email but i havent had one as of yet this was now 3 days ago!
they want me to pay by credit cardand give the details over an email so i have sent an email to them doing that just now...
if their so called email system is down then how am i meant to pay? i dont get into kk until the 7th which is when they want me to pay for it by and the 7th is also the first monday of the month and all shops/businesses close on the 1st monday of the month dont they??
have to see what happens...
they were most unhelpful when i called though and i dont even know how i go about sorting out a guide... she never asked me when i was on the phone if i wanted one so i guess ill try & sort it out at the headquarters...
the whole thing just seems to be a joke to me
