PelLihi has indicated that this thread is about Mexico

We are planning to go to Mexico in October 2006 for about 3 weeks.

We wanted to fly to Mexico City and take a bus or taxi down to Puerto Escondido. Then stay at a surfcamp there for 1 week. After that we wanted to drive (by rental car) all the way to Cancun!

And thats were our problem begins. I can't find any info on how far it is from Puerto Escondido to Cancun and if the trip is worth the drive and safe to go?!?!

Maybe some of you Mexico-Experts could help me out with my problem and give me some tipps on how to manage this road trip in the best way.

Keep on travelling,

Peter

If you want to go to Mexico City you can go by a direct fly to Cancun or maybe is better to fly from your Country to Cancun, then to Puerto Escondido by drive, it is safe to drive from Cancun to Puerto Escondido, better than begin from Mexico City, and of course it worths the drive you can do many water activities in Cancun, so don't miss it!

Hi Rubens,

thanks for your fast reply. Do you know how far it is from Cancun to Puerto Escondido and if the roads are ok??

Why do you think it's better to start in Cancun?

Thanks a lot.

Have a nice one.

Peter

Dear Peter;

I recomend you to fly directly to Oaxaca, because from Mexico City you'll drive about 10 or 11 hours (by taxi is too expensive)to Puerto Escondido and due to the political situation in Oaxaca is not too safe.
Then you can drive to Cancun but it takes about 7 or 8 hours. The trip is very long because the roads aren't in their best, but in the other hand is very beautiful and you can visit some arqueological sites.

For further information do not hesitate to contact me

hi peter,

my name's melanie, i'm from australia, and lived in mexico for a year (2002) as an exchange student.. although i didn't get to do any independant travel, i did a couple of trips with my host family and a big one with 50 other exchange students!

i'm planning on doing my own travels (mid next year) from mexico city to acapulco, then down the coast to puerto escondido, then onto the city where i used to live (ciudad del carmen, campeche) and then fly out of cancun like yourself.

i'll be travelling by myself from mexico city to the coast, and at this stage will be going by bus. if you want to hire your own car, just be ready with extra money for all the toll roads, as most highways do have a cost... (there are usually 2 different roads - one with a cost and one without - and i'm pretty sure it's worth paying the toll, as the toll road is maintained and like a normal highway, where as the other road has potholes, not as safe, etc.)
i'd maybe suggest it'd be just as easy to take a bus to each of your destinations??
atleast that way you'd know you couldn't get lost?! and another thing - expect the trip from mexico city to the coast to take quite a few hours! i can't remember exactly how long it took from mexico to acapulco, but atleast 4-5?? also from puerto escondido through chiapas is all jungle and mountainous, so it's takes longer to go up and down and over all the hills, etc.. just from my old city (ciudad del carmen) to cancun, the roads are pretty good and it'd take atleast 6,7,8?? hours..
is it your first visit to mexico?
anyway, hope that was some help.. if you've got any other questions, just ask! :)

goodluck and happy travelling!

¡VIVA MEXICO!

Well dear peter,

you can start by checking the official tourist board site
sectur.com, and there you have distances, prices, hotels, and all you need.

the service is excellent.

By road Cancun is 26hrs, minimum, non-stop, and the road it will take you to all sort of weathers, tough roads, lots of toll payment, and by the time you get to Cancun you will need like a week to recover...

From Mexico City to Oaxaca, the road is not very easy, it is lovely due to landscapes but not easy either.

Best thing to do is Get either to Cancun or Mexico City but definitely , just take flights. My country is too big to take these chances, well unless you have plenty of time and an excellent physical condition.

Due to political situations, Tourism is always kept apart, touristic places are not spilled with these things.

Considering the trip from Oaxaca to Cancun it is just as if you were thinking of two different areas and distances.

If you need more information Ill be glad to help you. I am from Mexico City but been living near Cancun for over 20 years.
:)

hello!
I'm sure that it takes 24 hrs driving from mexico to cancun, I really think it's not worth it, specially if you don't know the road... I suggest you take a bus or fly (on tuesdays you can get good rates at AVIACSA or try faresavers from aeromexico) and of course you have to take at least a bus from mexico to Puerto Escondido a taxi would be very very expensive. There are some political problems in Oaxaca,Oaxaca which is the state capital, but you can safely go to the touristic area, which is like 4-6 hrs from the state capital. If you want to fly to puerto esconddo you have to fly to Huatulco and then take a bus (1.5 HRS) TO P. Escondido. both are beautiful places!!!! if you need any other information, please contact me... bye yeru
