yo yo peeps,
how are the travels/travel plans going?
i'm thinking of heading to the gili's islands towards the end of 2006 and was just wondering if anyone knew how difficult and expensive it is to get a boat from Bali to Lombok and then from Lombok to the Gili's Islands......
I am not interested in any tours, just want to get to the islands.
also, has anyone got any idea about how much scuba diving costs in the G Islands. I have done my open water course and would either be interested in doing my advanced or just some fun dives. are there many dive shops and good reefs to dive off??
what are the islands like in terms of accomodation, beaches, nightlife. i know they arent very developed but want to just get some idea.
any info appreciated!
Give me a coupla days and I'll info you.
Have been to Lombok 3 times, the Gili's twice.
How long would you be there for?
You might want to try checking www.streetdirectory.com/indonesia/bali/. they may have maps of lombok but they defenitely have Maps of Bali
Hope this helps
reply to gili islands quistions
Weel how to get to gili´s very easy:
OPTION 1 : slowboat from Padangbay(bali) to lombok, then a bus to bangsal and then another little outrugger boat to Trawangan(the biggest island) you can buy a ticket in in Padangbay that takes you all the way to the island´s and this route is the cheapest, including transport on Lombok (aprox : 20 US) travel time 5-7 hours
OPTION 2 : Fly from bali(Denpasar) to Mataram(lombok) get a cab to Bangsal and a outrigger to the island (aprox : 50 US) trawel time including time in airport + transport on lombok and boat to gili 3-4 hours.
As for accomodation there are lots to choose from, basic fan room 5 US. luxury AC. room with swimmingpool 20-100 US.
There are 4-5 major dive opperators on the island ( i allways use/stay with BIG BUBBLE DIVING. prices for dive´s are around 20 US. pr. dive(depending on the amount of dives you book) and there are lots of sites to see (sharks and turtles garantied) the quality of the dives around these islands are as good as it gets(better then around bali) so unles you go further east(Sumbave+Komodo) this is the place to be.
The great thing about the island is that it has everything! Been coming there since 1994 and been there 8 times now. The island has developed a lot in that time, but is still without motorbikes/cars(only horsecarts)
Be carefull coming out there, if you expect to see a lot of Indonesia, people seem to get stuck there, and before you know it you have spent a lot of time there!
Please write if i cant help with more info.
back with some more questions about the gili's. its still in the pipeline, but i am thinking of going about april or may 2007.
i have heard from a few people that heaps of the reef has been destroyed by local fisherman using explosives to kill fish......how true do you think these stories are.
for example, my aunty went there in 1999 and said that she only saw scattered bits of reef. she didnt actually go out scuba diving, just snorkelling, but still you expect to see some good reef just off the shore, or is the beauty of the gili's really only accessible from boat dives?
you dont have any underwater photos of the reef that you have taken? just dont know if i trust the photo shown on the dive shops' websites as i imagine they are biased to draw you in.
apart from the gili's can you think of many other decent and reasonably priced dive sites to visit closeby to Australia (ie pacific/south east asia)
thanks for your help pete.
