Anyone wishing to tag along? I will be doing the Na Meo (Vietnam)- Nam Xoi (Laos) border crossing on Oct 2 to get to Laos. I did the reverse (Nam Xoi-Na Meo) last year and am dying to find out how the trip across will be the other way round. ( I suspect it may be tougher as it is , firstly, not yet a tourist trail, and secondly transport is irregular - but hey, that’s part of the fun!) The plan is to put up a night at Sam Doi Hotel in Tanh Noa City ( Aug 29-30), and then head to the western border district of Quan Son (maybe via Loc Vinh along route 217), put up a night at Na Meo Hill Commune, and cross over to Nam Xoi early next morning. From here we will take a bus truck/bus to Viengxai or Xam Neua. Among the plan is a visit to Tabong Village (UN award winning project in the fight against opium cultivation), and a lot more places that I couldn’t get done the last trip.
From Xam Neua, the plan is to journey to Ponsavan or Muang Ngoi (the route is more bumpy and longer). Luang Prabang is in the list. Expect to cross over to Thailand (Oct 9) at the Huay Xai- Chiang Kong border crossing, and head for Chiangmai.
This is part of my month-long "reverse journey" through Indochina. I will fly into Phnom Penh on Sept 12 where my journey begins after a visit to Koh Sralao, and possibly Pailin.
