Hi,

We may be extending our stay in Switzerland to accomodate some sights in Bodensee.

I was wondering why there isn't mention of Bodensee in Rick Steves' guidebook.

We thought of visiting Lindau, Konstanz, Romanshorn, Mainau, Meersburg and Friedrichshafen... Any comment about these places? cos we have no idea which are the better ones?

Thanks!

Lindau is nice and it would be worth stopping in Bregenz ,Austria (which is also on the Bodensee) , which is a lovely town. Don't know anything about the other places though, I'm afraid!

My mother loved Mainau, I found it rather boring as a teenager. (How many different roses can you find exciting? And after which it all blurs together?)

If you go to Friedrichshafen, visit the Zeppelin museum. Lindau I don't remember too well, only that is was a bit on the typical touristy side. Meaning a well-off town so nice and neat that you could eat from the sidewalk the way you eat from a dinner table. It was also hard on our wallets.

Do you need to pick between those cities? That would be a shame, as there is so much to see. Best base yourself in Friedrichshafen, as the other places can easily reached by car and boat from there.

A place I really liked was the Pfänder, the Mountain overlooking the Bodensee on the eastern side. It is in Austria, but the next town is Lindau. See http://www.pfaender.at/ Don't miss the show of the eagle observatory!

BTW, I think the Lonely Planet covers the Bodensee. It definitely covers far more than the Rick Steven's and I've found that in some cases the LP Germany book has better information than the official tourism website of the German government.
