My fiancee has promised me a fabulous honeymoon determined by the World Cup Winner and Italia it is . We are working on an extremly ridiculously low budget and coming from LA. I need advice on where to go and what to see within this time frame. We will be traveling on April 30 2007 for about 2 weeks. Off the beaten path is always exciting but I don't want to forsake the history, art and architecture in the bigger cities. I don't mind backpacking and would rather take public transport or foot if possible. Although I would love to sample the haute couture cuisine a bottle of wine or pint of beer with a slice of pizza sounds fabulous to me. Is this time frame and budget feasible or should I just chuck it and head to Mexico instead where the dollar is mighty?
My thooughts are lofty but a novice at heart.
I hope you find a way to make the Italy idea work. 2 weeks is a nice amount of time, not sure about how to do Italy cheaply. We stayed in Amalfi which wasn't cheap but it was wonderful and very convenient.
I strongly believe you would fancy Belarus as a destination for your honeymoon. It is not overrun with tourists, has moderate climate, enough sights to see, the dollar is very mighty here and the cuisine is very rich. People here are very hospitable, and what may be particularly important for you there are many offers of staying in countryside cottages - where you can enjoy nature (and escape from the big city) and not only it...
Thanks for the attention, Felix
At the current exchange rate, expect to spent at least 2200 USD for the two of you for 2 weeks in Italy. This budget is just so that you have a bed every night and can buy bread and cheese in a supermarket. On top of that will be the flight tickets, which from LA will cost you from 800 USD per person return. Also consider that if you leave April 30 2007, you'll be in Italy in May. May is the high season in Italy, prices are about 20% higher than during the rest of the year, so you need to slap these 20% on top of the numbers I gave you. Ergo it would be better if you could come two weeks earlier during April.
If this is too much for you, consider hitting Egypt. You'll spent about 1000 USD there for two weeks for the two of you and you'll get to stay in private rooms in two and three star hotels instead of hostel dorms. May is nice for travelling in Egypt. The flight from LA to Cairo will cost you from 900-1200 USD per person return. Cheapest option is to fly with KLM (Dutch airline). It also has the positive side effect that for a small fee you can request a stopover in Amsterdam, giving you a piece of Europe too.
Hope I helped.
BTW, check out these threads for Italy travel:
