Hi, I am planing a trip for new Years and January. It is only a month and I am on a very limited budget, so it won't be a "see-all" trip. My trouble is to pick the place. An obvious choice would be Sydney, because I promised my self I would learn how to surf and heard that Sydney is awesome...but some also say that Perth is grately underestamated...I might be travelling alone (21-year-old gal) -no problems there right?! Would some say NZ was cheaper? better?! Any thoughts on the subject will be highly appreciated...
New Zealand is about 10% cheaper than Australia; definitely as far as the big(ger) cities go. Much more beautiful, nature wise (with said beautiful nature much more easily accessible). That's not to say that Australia doesn't have absolutely stunning places, but it's much more readily apparent everywhere in New Zealand, with a greater variety close together.
I don't surf, but as far as I know, there's not nearly as many places good for surfing in New Zealand (I've seen some brochures about learning to surf for places north of Auckland, but that's been about it). Then again, the New Years period is already pretty much booked full in Sydney, and generally speaking very very busy around there in Australia.
Travelling by yourself is perfectly okay, both in Australia and New Zealand.
New Zealand certainly has better skiing and mountain scenery as it is alot colder than Aus in general but i havent herd of great surf anywhere in NZ although im sure there would be somewhere.
Sydney would be a very wise choice as there is a heap of good surf beaches for learners and you shouldnt find it hard to find a place that gives lessons.
Perth has excellent surf(especially in Margarat River) but the New Year celebration is nothing spectacular
I already knew that sidney was popular for new years and everything, but I guess I though finding hostels etc wouldn't be a problem. I travelled in popular places for high season before where people told me everything would be booked, and I managed to find accommodation anyway...probably not the cheapest though...Do you guys think it will be too late to find something in late november/early december?!
