Hi there, my husband and I are setting off on the adventure of a lifetime travelling from England to Australia without flying!! I am Australian and he is English and I have finally talked him into settling down in Oz, the only catch being is that we can't fly. We intend to take our 4WD and catch ferries from country to country. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. And no we are not mad!!

I would love to hear input about this as well! My wife is an Aussie, and at some point we'll live over there (though we intend on spending time in both countries during our lives). I already have a spouse visa, which is validated after a trip we made in April - however we're staying in the UK until my wife gets her British citizenship and passport! (and me my permanent residency of Australia)

A friend of mine tried to do this. apart from the massive visa issues you will have alon the way plus, insurance issues, it is not possible to take any kind of passange ferry from indonesia to australia, you will have to organise something with a freight cargo ship which can be very expensive and difficult and time consuming. there is also the problem of having to pay import duty on your car when you finally bring it into australia. i would recomend that you come via russia rather then the middle east, but orgasnising visas in russia are diffucult because you need to have a pre planned itenary and have places to stay pre booked for every night you will spend in the country. im not sure about the rules in china. but once you get thru there i think it becomes easier in south east asia except for indonesia. the only ferries you would need are between uk and france, malaysia and indonesia both of which are possible and between islands in indonesia. then you will be stuck. this trip should be planned at least a year in advance to organise visas, insurance, ferrries and vacaniations and things.
cheers good luck

The only problem with going through russia is that it is still a bit unsettled around Kazakhstan and I have heard that it is difficult to get into China. We have looked at ferries from Yemen to India. Passenger cargo boats look ok but does anyone have any first hand experience on them? We can actually get 1 from Tilbury in England right the way through to Aust but it seems a bit boring?!

What about selling the truck indonesia and then getting a boat to australia and buying a different truck. Would prob be alot easier and cheaper then trying to bring it across with you.

Hi Anne,
You may well have alreay seen it, but check out
http://www.petermoore.net/wwh/wwh.htm
Peter Moore writes about this exact journey from London to Sydney and comes across the very same issue in Indonesia - and flies instead!
Also, the book points out the tricky nature of crossing Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan etc at the best of times, and it may not get any easier in the current climate.
I haven't done the route myself, but just a thought - is it possible to sail from Singapore instead? Even if it's still on a freight ship, it might be easier from there as English is so widely spoken.
Good luck!
