Is it possible to get through Mexico (Along the Pacific Coast) to Panama City via motorcycle within 2 weeks? I'm going to be attempting this with a friend in December. Our goal is at least 8 hours riding time per day.
I have painstakingly timed, charted, and planned it--but when it comes down to it, I have no experience with the region. Is this a realistic goal/general route?
Any tid-bits on road travel that you may think useful would be immensely appreciated too! Thank you so much!
It's easy and the more Spanish you speak the better.
Don't travel at night-animals have a tendency to straggle on roads and look for hotels that allow you to park in their locked courtyard-quite common in Latina America.
Que Pasa un Buen Viaje!
Very Possible, and except for the rural areas of Costa Rica the roads are excellent. Join (sent by message) for great advice (they are RV'ers however they give excellent advice for any type of motorist travelling through Mexico and Central America) I'd give myself 15-16 days max. as you may spend 2-4 hours at each border crossing with paperwork. I drove from Long Island, NY to Guatemala City in 6 days in 1987, even stopped a day in Mexico City enroute. You are able to easily ride from sunrise to sunset, however the borders will cut into your time they are open 6AM to about 8PM. Be advised you'll have no insurance once you enter Guatemala. Be very careful of aggresive drivers on the road, there are many hit and run accidents in C.A. involving pedestrians and bikes, as most used vehicles don't carry any insurance themselves.
