nah has indicated that this thread is about Australia

I've booked a month in Australia from 19th December, landing at Cairns, and was wondering if anybody knows/thinks that I'll be able to find accomodation easily on arrival or would be better booking something now ? Any thoughts appreciated.

I don't know exactly how busy Cairns is around Christmas, but given that it's the busiest time of the year everywhere (Sydney for example is pretty much booked full already, although that's especially for New Year's), I'd definitely book now.

There are a lot of hostels there, 4 months ahead of time is pretty drastic, but have something before you go. For somewhere nice, I recommend Gilligans, for somewhere less nice but really fun I recommend Asylum.

Thanks to you both, I think I'll opt for somewhere 'nice' as being a 40 something traveller, Asylum sounds like somewhere I would have chosen 25 years ago. Thanks again.

Hi nah,

as a 40 something traveller... the options above are a bit more "Young"... shall we say!
Can I recommend Gecko's in Cairns (Check it out in Lonely Planet etc.)... we stayed there for 3 weeks (we're both over 30) Bit more laid back and quieter and only five minutes walk to the centre.
Very clean and the staff are great.
here's the review on Bug :

Cairns in December is the height of Summer (Very hot and humid!) so it's not peak time as it's also stinger season (most people tend to go North in Winter unlike Melb and Sydney!

Either way we were there in December and it was nice if a bit hot in the daytime.

Have fun and enjoy

Taffski.
