I haven't been in many ZOOs either. I prefer watch animals in their natural environment. :) But if I have to decide for one I visited, my decision is ZOO in Madrid.

I don't know the best zoo. But I have been to a zoo in Calcutta-India. That one was pretty awful. The animals there where very undernourished and had little space. Visitors seemed to enjoy themselves by throwing stones and rubbish at them. No...that one was very depressing. But to give a more happy message. I have been to a zoo in the Dutch town of Arnhem and that one was great. Atleast the animals looked healthy.

Without a doubt, Chester Zoo in Cheshire, England. Barcelona Zoo was worth a half day visit but only to see Snowflake, the albino gorilla who unfortunately died a couple of years ago.

the best zoo is the San Diego Zoo in California. The Zoo nursery is a wonderful part where we saw baby orangutans (is there anything cuter?) and a snow white baby polar bear. The natural habitats there are beautiful and the animals are extremely well cared for. The Wild Animal park you take a tram thru & see animals in very natural settings. The animal shows are very educational & entertaining.

I agree with Polkadot that the San Diego Zoo is a very cool zoo. I also enjoy Licoln Park Zoo in Chicago, Illinois. They have renovated once again (increasing habitat size and creating more natural settings) and it's free. Though I haven't been there in several years, the Milwaukee Zoo in Wisconsin was always fun to visit too.

Howletts and Port Lympne Wild Animal Parks are quite good. They are not necessarily Zoos, but similar idea. The founder John Aspinall (a self-made millionaire) had a dream of protecting and breeding wild animals and then sending them back to safe areas in their natural habitat. He actually made all his money by gambling and then set up the two parks. He bought lots of ill-treated animals from circuses, zoos and people that owned them as pets and then established the parks as charities.
Well worth a visit!

The parks are both in Kent, England!
