the zoo inside skansen park, in stockholm. animals live in their almost natural environment, in fact, it doesn't look like a zoo.

Well, probably there not so many travellers visiting the zoo on all their travels. Same for me. I only visited the zoo in Beijing, because of the giant panda's. These were the only animals that looked ok, the rest was really awful (and I heard it's better than it used to be). Zoo in Antwerp was pretty nice.

Been to several zoos in Holland, of which I think the Noorder Dierenpark in Emmen is the best. Big for such a small place and lots of space for the animals.
In contrary to the zoos in rotterdam (blijdorp) en amsterdam (artis) which were not that great.

Zoo in Amersfoort is pretty nice because of the white tigers.

Are there any travellerspoint members who visit zoos regularly on their travels?

Michael

Actually no. But I went one time in India. Entrance fee was only 20 eurocents so I decided to go (I am still DUTCH) but it was not worth it.

ok, I'm talking about a really small zoo here but it's my favorite. It's the St-Félicien zoo, in the lac st jean region in the province of québec. The zoo focuses on north american animals and the animals are not in cages, you are. You go around the zoo in very small bus that are in fact cages on wheels.

I've been to:
1-the Taronga Zoo in Sydney: it is clean and big. All the animals seem like in good health and the staff are taking good care to the animals. Over there, i can have a vey close contact with the KOALAS :) and the KANGAROOS, also the WOMBAT are sooooo cute!! If someone who doesn't like animals i think he will definitely like visiting that zoo. :)

2- Another one is the Night Safari at Singapore Zoo: it's great visiting the zoo at night. ALso, the animals are kept in spacious and wildlife like atmosphere. I will sure to visit it again if oneday i visit Singapore again! But the bad experience i had in that zoo was the weather in Singapore is extremely HOT (no matter in winter or summer), so it was kinda unconfort!:(

3- I just have visited the Jardim Zoologico de Lisboa (the Zoo in Lisbon) on June this year. Well, the entrance fee is pricy and the atmosphere over there is not what i've expected it to be It is simple and it is "really" a zoo :) Not worth visiting for someone else who doesn't like animals.

4- The Zoo in Tampa Bay, i don't remember much about it...

Another zoo i've been visited were disgusting and disappointed, so i made myself forget about them.

I'm quite late to join this topic, but I do hope to revive it.

I am one of those people who regularly visit zoos and wild life parks during my travels, and I can say I have visited many zoos so far. It would be very hard to say which one is best, but if I had to, I'd say the Toronto Zoo (http://www.torontozoo.com/) wins (maybe because of a very fond memory of riding a camel there). But if you go, be prepared - it WILL take an entire day. This zoo is huge, and if you cannot afford to devote it a full day, I would not suggest going. You'll just be disappointed to have to leave without having seen all the beauties there.

Another favorite of mine is the Nurnberg Zoo (http://www.tiergarten.nuernberg.de/v04/), and I am especially looking forward to the next visit once their new aquatic animals zone is built. I love the general atmosphere of this zoo, very cozy and comfortable (for the animals, as well as their human visitors).

In addition to these, let's call them, top 2, I also very much enjoyed the more urban zoo in Antwerp (http://www.zooantwerpen.be/), as well as the zoos in Los Angeles (http://www.lazoo.org/), Cleveland (http://www.clemetzoo.com/ - although it was raining all day when I was there, and would definitely like an opportunity to visit it once again), Budapest (http://www.zoobudapest.com/english), and Zagreb, Croatia (http://www.zgzoo.com/hr/). The Zagreb Zoo is especially interesting for its position in a very beautiful, serene, urban park called Maksimir, on the eastern edge of the city center.

Maybe a little different, but on a similar note, and definitely of interest if you have kids (also if you don't) and half a day to spare in Miami, the Jungle Island (http://jungleisland.com/) over there is a very fun place.

I don't know if a 'good' zoo actually exists.
Give me safari parks any day.

What a good thread!

1) My personal favourite which appears to be a recurring trend in here is San Diego Zoo, amazing setting and the habitats were all fab. I did find it weird though with their focus on eco friendly setting etc, and so many people were being driving around in big double decker buses around the zoo.

2) Taronga Zoo comes a close second, I loved the Koala exhibit, and the view from the Giraffe enclosure over the Sydney harbour.

3) Edinburgh Zoo is really good also, as I grew up with this zoo, not literally as I wasn't in an exhibit or anything, but I have more knowledge of their projects and how they look after all the animals also, plus the new "Budongo Exhibit" is immense.
