Hi,

I will be travelling overland from Santiago to Lima in October and was wondering if anyone has done it before and what is the best route to take? I was hoping to do it in around 5 days, if possible.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Chris

The PanAm Highway is not the most interesting road in South America. Desert all the way up to Lima (up to the ecuadorian border in fact). It is beautiful at some places but to do the whole 3500 km you will surely get bored. So take some parallel roads when possible, although with only 5 days time you will not be able to do a lot.
From Santiago till Antafogasta there are not many choices. Than itmight be worth going via San pedro de Atacama > Geisers el Tatio> Calama and then down to the coastal road up to Iquique.
Then back to the PanAm to Arica and into Peru. Just before Tacna you can take a beautiful coastal road again (you will be amazed how people turned desert into a prosperous agricultural area)Asphalt till Ilo, then corrigated gravel till Mollendo. Then not many options as to follow the PanAm again as going inland means going via Cuzo and will take too long for you.

I would suggest a bus ride directly to Ica in Peru. Then enjoy the oasis in Huacachina, maybe the Paracas national marine park, and then continue to Lima. Peru is prices for accomodation and food are about a third compared to Chile.
Just the bus ride should last more than two days so there will not be much time left to see places.
