Ive been travelling in SA for about 6 months now, and have decided to extend my flight by 6 months so I can go back to Cusco for 6 months to work.
Problem is my flight home is from Rio. Im going to be in the pantanal (campo grande) and then I want to travel through bolivia as quickly as possible. I know I can take a bus directly from La Paz to Cusco. Can I go directly from the border to La Paz? Whats the best and safest (since i will be a single female) way to do it? I know there´s a train from santa cruz to campo grande, but Im a bit nervous about trains on my own.
any advice greatly appreciated!
No need to be worried about that train journey... at least not more than you'd need to worry about taking a bus in that area :-)
Don't plan everything too tight, though. I don't know when you plan to do this, but both rail service and road conditions in eastern Bolivia are quite unpredictable, and you may allow for up to twice as much time to cover that stretch of the route as you'd think it would take... I'm not entirely sure, but the same may well apply to the brazilian pantanal.
There is no train from Campo grande to Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Only from Pto Quijarra, just over the border in Bolivia , to Santa Cruz. From Campo Grande to Corumbá you best go by bus, than a taxi to cross the border and up to the trainstation. From Santa Cruz you can take a bus to La Paz.
Another , faster but more expensive option, is to take a flight from Campo Grande to Santa Cruz de la Sierra. E.g. Gol flies direct
around 600 reais for one way
